Raising Healthy, Happy Trout at Blue Stream Aquaculture
Our products reflect our passion for sustainable protein. There is no denying that we gravitate toward aquaculture because the importance of locally raised fish is so great, but also because our core team came from building and running aquaculture operations throughout New England.

Blue Stream Aquaculture, LLC - Cape Cod - is an eight-acre Trout Hatchery located in West Barnstable, Massachusetts that was built in the late 1850’s. Our farm is naturally artesian fed, flowing through both natural and man-made ponds, raceways and a hatch house where brown, brook, rainbow and tiger trout are spawned and raised year-round.
At Blue Stream Aquaculture (BSA) we hand select all of our brood fish for spawning to ensure quality eggs that will thrive and grow into quality fish for both stocking and eating. Spawning season takes place in the fall of each year and eggs are cared for daily in our “Hatch house” until hatchings are 30 to 45 days old. Hatchlings are raised with great care and are given feed specially formulated for their size and species 15 days after hatching. Fish are then moved into outdoor raceways or tanks that are shaded and covered to protect the young fish. As they grow, our fish are split or graded into lager sand bottom raceways or tanks and continuously monitored. We use the highest quality feeds available to us to ensure the fish are healthy and looking their best throughout their maturation. Our pristine 52-degree water source and low stocking densities allows Blue Stream to limit handling and reduce stress on the fish. We feed them the highest quality feeds we can, and as a result, our fish require no vaccinations or antibiotics. This makes our fish ideal for stocking ponds for fishing and enjoying as a delicious meal. BSA Cape Cod has recently installed a solar array with battery back storage to offset grid energy use. We strive to lower our carbon foot print to serve our local markets with responsibly raised, high quality product. We are continuously improving our system through restoring raceways, tanks and improving our water filtration methods. Our sustainable, resilient farm will allow for continued production of healthy and vibrant fish at Blue Stream Aquaculture for years to come. |
Blue Stream Aquaculture NH, LLC - Our Charlestown, New Hampshire fish are raised in a newly constructed state of the art Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS), that was designed, fabricated and constructed by BSA staff. Our staff have over 75 years of combined experience in design, build out and operations of RAS. From our experience, each system is designed for specific species, taking into account the health and well being of the fish raised at each life stage, energy conservation and output of high-quality products we all expect.
Juvenile fish are sourced from high quality hatcheries and are given food formulated for each species, as well as being housed in a separate “Nursery Facility”. In this facility, optimal conditions are controlled and monitored 24 hours a day ensuring the fish well being. Fish are fed high quality feed formulated for each life stage as they move through the Nursery facility. With close daily monitoring there is no use for antibiotics or medication. As Juveniles grow and grow out of their “Nursery Facility” they are then moved to larger grow-out tanks and once again are monitored 24 hours a day. Fish are raised at low densities to ensure optimal health and fed feeds formulated for their optimal nutritional needs. All fish are held at optimal temperature and both natural and artificial lighting is used to produce the highest of quality fish for markets. BSA New Hampshire is currently producing Rainbow and Brook Trout that are ready for market today! Designs and fabrication are underway on adding greenhouses to utilize the nutrient rich water from the fish facilities. Concurrently staff is working on a two-prong energy plan to reduce the need for grid connection as they have done on other farm partners. Please stay tuned for more details as the plan gets implementation. Our goal is to produce high quality fish with low environment impact, here locally, for markets that expect fresh and nutritional protein. |
